The number of modern art galleries is exploding in Istanbul. In neighborhoods like Nişantaşı and Taksim. But most of all in Cihangir, a hip district where a lot of foreigners live. One of the most cosmopolitan areas of Istanbul.
Just south on the downward slope of Cihangir is the Tophane hood. That has become a new center of art galleries, because it is located close to Istanbul Modern, the Museum of Modern Art, inaugurated on December 11, 2004, prominently featuring the work of Turkish artists. The museum, located on the Bosphorus in a converted warehouse, is the first of its kind in Turkey.
Young artists and art gallery owners started to settle in the neighborhood along the Boğazkesen Caddesi, the main street of the area.
Names of the galleries: Galeri Apel, Edisyon, Daire, Pi Artworks, ellipsis Gallery, Rodeo, Marquise, artSümer, Mars, Elipsis, 03 Pg Art Gallery, and several more.
It is a creative and dynamic area where you can always find new art exhibitions and new projects.
Exciting to visit and to stroll through the backstreets exploring the mix of old and new buildings, conservative and modern life styles, traditional street food and brand new fashionable restaurants.
On Sunday December 11 the art galleries are open from 12.00-18.00 for the Tophane Art Walk.
You can also check out the new Italian-Turkish restaurant Peymane/La Cucina . They offer a 15% discount on that day.
