Graffiti art festival in Istanbul

Posted on 19 July 2011

Me, talking about street art in Istanbul

Istanbul is already the party capital of Europe, and now it will become the graffiti capital of Europe!

I am happy that the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality’s Assembly of Youth and Culture decided to host an international graffiti festival for the second time. On Sunday July 24 in Taksim Gezi Park. The first festival was organized in 2008.

We will be able to see the art and meet a total of over 60 artists from around Turkey and Europe.
The festival is being organized to promote and spread graffiti art in Turkey. What a wonderful initiative!
The slogan of the festival is ‘Meeting of the All Stars-Stars’.

Graffiti – the name for images or lettering scratched, scrawled, painted or marked in any manner on property – has existed since ancient times with examples dating back to ancient Greece and the Roman Empire. In modern times, paint, particularly spray paint, and marker pens have become the most commonly used graffiti materials. Many countries consider any kind of marking or painting property without the property owner’s consent as a form of defacement and vandalism, which is a punishable crime.

There are many different types and styles of graffiti. Very often graffiti is abstract art. Sometimes graffiti expresses social and political messages. I see more and more examples of stencil graffiti, a very common modern graffiti style, on the walls of Istanbul’s nightlife neighborhoods like Kadikoy, Asmali Mescit, Galata, Beyoglu, Taksim, Cihagir and Tophane. But I also come across more realistic images of movie stars like Marilyn Monroe, Charlie Chaplin etc.

Graffiti is reviled by many authorities and property owners. But certain examples of this form of street art are sometimes also subject to protection. I am happy to see that the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality gives the right message to the general public: graffiti is not by definition vandalism, but often art.
Come to Taksim Gezi Park to see for yourself.

Power FM is sponsoring the festival. There will also be skateboarding, break dance performances and music by DJs.
